The Sajeevam Anti-Drug Campaign, launched on February 25, 2023, under the leadership of the Ernakulam Social Service Society, aimed to raise awareness and combat substance abuse across the Ernakulam District. Implemented in partnership with KCBC’s Temperance Commission and supported by local parishes, community-based organizations, and volunteers, the campaign reached a broad spectrum of the community including children, youth, migrants, women, men, and catechism teachers.
Key Activities:
-
Awareness Classes: Conducted across various segments including women and men self-help groups, migrant communities, and catechism teachers, reaching over 3,000 participants.
-
Youth Engagement: Competitions such as elocution events encouraged students to speak out on the dangers of substance abuse.
-
Pax in Families (Cyber Fasting): Promoted digital detox and quality family time through awareness sessions and distribution of 5,000+ circulars.
-
Community Outreach: 15,000 IEC materials (handbooks and leaflets) were distributed, and street plays, poster-making, and vehicle rallies were held in parishes.
-
Task Force Formation: A trained 73-member task force was established to continue anti-drug advocacy at the grassroots level.
-
Counselling Support: Guidance, counselling, and therapeutic interventions were made available to individuals and families in need.
The campaign not only increased awareness on drug and alcohol abuse but also fostered a spirit of community participation and preventive action. It stands as a model for collaborative, faith-based social action to protect the well-being of our communities.
