Indian Ocean Tsunami of 2004, that hit the coasts of several countries of South and Southeast Asia in December 2004. The tsunami and its aftermath were responsible for immense destruction and loss on the rim of the Indian Ocean including Indian sub-continent and Kerala. The coastal belt of ESSS suffered severe casualties including loss of life and properties. Major response of ESSS for Tsunami 2004 are
- ESSS supplied food and mat to five-relief camps. Further, 3668 special kits with food, clothing, and household utensils etc were distributed to the affected families.
- 16 medical camps were opened and from which 1850 people got benefited.
- Psychological counseling was arranged to help them get rid of the panic anxiety.
- Organized play therapy and tour programmes for children.
- Sports items were distributed to the children and five libraries were also opened in relief camps for them
- The mud and derbies deposited by the tsunami was cleaned by the women squad organized under the leadership of self help groups of ESSS.
- ESSS rehabilitated 162 families in association with the government and the assistance from Caritas India.
- Construction of 440 rainwater-harvesting tanks along with the tsunami rehabilitation works became a relief for the coastal people.
- Organized and capacitated 2000 task force members with the support of Caritas India in Disaster Preparedness & Mitigation.
- Prepared and published disaster management plan of Nayarambalam, Njarakkal and Elamkunnappuzha panchayat with support of Caritas India and submitted to District administration.
- Prepared Disaster Management Plan of 23 selected fisheries villages of Ernakulam district for the district administration and government of Kerala as part of UNDP supported Community Based Disaster Management Project.
